Communication Game Changer: Skype Translator

July 24, 2014

Skype is rolling out a new feature that has the ability to change the way people communicate globally. According to Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, the “Skype Translator” will have the ability to facilitate video conferencing between two individuals speaking completely different languages.

Satya Nadella was born in India, a country that has over two dozen official languages, and can clearly benefit from this kind of translation technology. Any country can see the clear communication advantage of Skype Translator- this type of technology has the ability to become a necessary tool of communication.

At the Worldwide Partner Conference 2014, Nadella held a preview of the new Skype technology. The video conference featured one participant speaking English and the other speaking German, all the while successfully communicating through Skype.

The live demonstration showed seamless real-time audio translation from German to English and vice versa, exemplifying the technology’s ability. During his key note address Nadella stated, "We will reinvent productivity to empower every person and every organization on the planet to do more and achieve more”.  The possibilities for international communication are endless when language is no longer and inhibiting factor.

Nadella stated that he believes this technology will transform human communication as we know it. He predicts that this technology will break boundaries for people across the world, and increase productivity and efficiency in businesses worldwide.

While Nadella did not reveal the languages in which the service will be offered, he hopes to have a public preview of Skype Translator before the end of the year.  According to Nadella, this technology is just part of Microsoft’s effort to “empower everyone to do more and achieve more”.
